“I’m the first in my family to achieve an advanced degree, and I realize the role that mentorship played in reaching my goals. I continually try to pay that forward as a Psychology professor at SBCC.”

My major is Computer Engineering and I am a Computer Science tutor in the CS lab at SBCC. I chose to be a part of the Student-Ready program because I know how important it is to have peer to peer support throughout a student’s academic journey.

"I value our SBCC community and I am excited to be a part of SBCC’s efforts to expand educational opportunities for underrepresented students.”

¡Hola! Hablo español.

I was born in La Paz, Mexico. I'm currently in the Engineering program at SBCC and transferring next semester to the Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering major. I really enjoy playing tennis, snorkeling, scuba diving, and hanging out with friends.

"I'm part of the Student-Ready program as a Spanish translator of the website and our informational materials. As a non-native English speaker, I understand how important it is to make information available in the reader's native language."

Shayna

Shayna Mairo, Grant Assistant

I graduated SBCC spring 2020 with an AA in History and Chicana/Chicano Studies. I am currently attending UC Riverside majoring in History and Ethnic Studies.

Once I graduate, I will be continuing my education and obtaining a master’s degree in education. My career goal is to teach at the high school level. I am the first in my family to pursue higher education. I also went back to school at the age of 35. Going back after 15 years presented challenges, however from those challenges, I found solutions. I love offering my support to students in any way that I can.
